Student’s designs to extort girlfriend’s father go awry

The drama began three days back when the girl’s father, an ex- MCD councillor now dealing in real estate, received an extortion call for R50lakh from an unknown number.

The caller increased the amount to R75lakh after he apparently learnt that a police complaint has been made against the girl’s father, who had in-turn offered a bribe to investigators.

The father lodged a complaint in this regard. He told the police that the caller had threatened to kill his children if his demand was not met within the next two days.

“The caller had complete information on the victim’s children, their school/colleges and their movement. This suggested that he was known to the victim’s family,” said a senior police officer.

“A team formed to investigate the case tracked down the number used to make the calls. It was learnt that the number was issued in Gorakhpur , Uttar Pradesh and belonged to one Diwakar Kumar,” he added.

Diwakar was traced to Delhi’s Kotla Mubarakpur area, where he was picked up for questioning. Diwakar, who is also a second year student of fashion designing, told the police that his SIM card had been stolen from his flat around 10 days back.

“Further questioning revealed that Diwakar’s classmate Piyush Kumar had visited his flat on the day when the SIM card went missing. We apprehended Kumar and during interrogation he confessed to his crime,” the officer said.

During interrogation, the officer said, Kumar told them that he wanted to be rich overnight so that he could meet his girlfriend’s status. Also, he wanted to impress her by taking her for long drives in a luxury car, which he planned to purchase with the extorted money.
