The trouble started after four young men who did not belong to the university, entered the campus and began drinking, after which they molested some women, police said.

All four have been arrested.

The clash occurred when a group of students that had gathered thought the police, who had been summoned to the scene, were trying to shield the culprits, instead of arresting them.

They alleged this was because one of the young men was the son of a police officer. Police denied the charge.

The accused — Nitin Kapoor, Ankit Nanda, Amit Chauhan and Gagan Kumar — came to the campus around 2.30 pm.

“The four men were boozing, misbehaving with women. When the security guards asked them for their identity cards, one of them took out a pistol,” said Shephalika Shekhar, Vice President, JNU students union.

The weapon later turned out to be a toy pistol.

Initially, the students did not let the police take the boys, surrounding the jeep for more than four hours.
