Get ready to pay more for your cooking gas. The government plans to limit to four the number of subsidised LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders you are entitled to in a year. Beyond this, you will have to pay the market price for every extra cylinder, which is Rs 300 more than the cost of a subsidised cylinder.

In Mumbai, a subsidised cylinder comes for R348. For an average household that uses eight to 10 cylinders a year, this translates into a 40-50% increase in its gas bill, by Rs1,200-1,800.

A petroleum ministry official told HT that cabinet approval would be sought before implementing any such decision. “We will move a cabinet note shortly,” the official said. The LPG subsidy bill stood at Rs22,000 crore last year.
