According to the environment department’s little-known guidelines for citizens to save power, a whopping 360 MW can be saved annually if 2 lakh people used desert coolers instead of air conditioners for the four summer months.

It also says that 20 lakh 100-watt bulbs are replaced with compact florescent lamps (CFLs), the city will save 160 MW power. Or, replacing 20 lakh 40-watt tube lights with 36 watt slim tube lights and electronic chokes will save 24 MW.

On Thursday, the government distributed the guidelines at various functions celebrating Earth Day, where Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit participated with school children, eco clubs and citizen groups.
