The transport department is planning to increase minimum parking charges from Rs. 10 to Rs. 30 during non-peak hours and R50 during peak hours.
Acting on a Delhi high court order, the special task force on traffic issues headed by the Delhi chief secretary has recommended increasing parking charges in a bid to reduce growing congestion in the Capital.
Delhi has over 200 parking lots that can accommodate about 3,000 cars at a time, grossly inadequate for a city that has over 70 lakh vehicles.
"We have issued a public notice inviting suggestions on the proposal. The recommendations will be taken up for implementation after a month or so after considering public suggestions," said R Chandra Mohan, commissioner, transport department.
In order to boost finances, the commissioners of the three municipal bodies have also felt the need to hike parking charges. The proposal for the same will be brought before the deliberative wing in a couple of months.
According to the latest proposal, minimum parking charges will be Rs. 30 for first three hours during non-peak hours and Rs. 50 for first three hours during morning and evening peak hours. Every additional non-peak hour would mean Rs. 20 more and Rs. 50 during peak hours. The proposal has also got the support of the Delhi traffic police.
"At a time when the city needs huge curtailment in private vehicles, the number is fast increasing. A steep increase in parking charges would restrain a large section of people from using cars to go to places which are well connected by different means of public transport," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic), who is also a member of the STF.
Earlier, Bhure Lal, chairperson, EPCA, had also emphasised on increasing parking fee.
