Starting Friday (January 1), the Middle and Outer Circles will be closed to vehicular traffic for 80 days. That’s because the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is starting the construction of eight new subways.

“This is a large-scale project and there are bound to be disruptions,” said NDMC spokesperson Anand Tiwari. “Half the Outer Circle carriageway won’t be available for vehicular traffic... As and when parking space is available, we’ll put it to use.”

“This is a commercial centre, they can’t restrict vehicular traffic so haphazardly. Where are traders, shoppers, office-goers going to park?” said Atul Bhargava, president, New Delhi Trader’s Association.

Public transport won’t be any better. Buses on the Outer Circle, except those that end at New Delhi station, will be diverted.
