As reported by HT on Friday ('Police do a U-turn on auto fine norm'), the traffic police had called off the idea barely two days after it had decided to issue challans directly to violating auto-rickshaw drivers.

The plan included delivering challans issued for refusal to ply, overcharging and misbehaviour with commuters.

Claiming that "it wouldn't be feasible," Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic) had then said, "Penalty for these violations is merely R100. We cannot use our resources to realise this paltry fine."

The traffic police again revived the plan on Saturday. “We have started sending our men to the errant auto drivers’ registered addresses to hand over the challans to them,” confirmed a senior traffic police officer.

The police, however, did not offer any explanation as to how it became ‘feasible’ for them to activate the drive as the manpower situation had not changed since last week.

The traffic police had earlier started an SMS drive to register complaints against delinquent auto-rickshaw drivers.

To register a complaint against refusal to ply, type REF (space) vehicle number (space) location (space) time of refusal and send it to 56767. Similarly for overcharging, type OVC, for misbehaviour MIS and for harassment HAR and send it to the same number.
