The Delhi Government has submitted before the Delhi High Court that they are enforcing the ban in right earnest. Not just smalltime merchants and stationary shops, they have stepped up the crackdown on the “big fish” too.
Names like Adidas, Reebok Life Style, Shoppers Stop in Ansal Plaza, Ritu Wears, Reliance Trends, Westside, Bata, Numero Uno and Mother Diary figure among the 119 persons/business establishments that have been booked by the Environmental Department.
Complaints have already been filed against 43 violators before Metropolitan Magistrate courts.
The Bench of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Mukta Gupta was hearing a petition fled by environment activist Vinod Kumar Jain alleging that despite a notification banning use of plastic bags, rampant use of such bags continue.
The Department said Shoppers Stop at Ansal Plaza on Khel Gaon Marg has been fined.
“Government of Delhi has made and is continuing to make every endeavour to fully implement the notification banning use of plastic bags,” said the affidavit filed by M. Dwarakanath of the Environment Department before the court.
