Two killed, two injured in accident

Two elderly women were killed and two others were injured after a speeding truck hit their auto rickshaw in central Delhi's Desh Bandhu Gupta Road on Friday morning.

Two elderly women were killed and two others were injured after a speeding truck hit their auto rickshaw in central Delhi's Desh Bandhu Gupta Road on Friday morning.

Police said the accident took place around 6am and the victims were returning home after visiting Jhandewalan Temple.

The deceased were identified as Saroj Wadhwan and Daya Harzai, both in their late 50s and residents of west Shalimar Bagh. The injured were identified as Bhikhari Shah, the auto rickshaw driver, and another woman passenger named Nirmal Bedi, a neighbour of the two deceased women.

"The women were returning home in the auto rickshaw and had reached the Faiz Road traffic signal where the truck coming from Filmistan side hit their auto from behind," a police officer said.

"The autorickshaw was crushed and one of the victims was rushed to Lady Hardinge Medical College. The other injured were taken to RML hospital. Harzai was pronounced dead at Lady Hardinge

while Wadhwan succumbed to her injuries at RML," added the officer.

Police said the truck driver was caught by eyewitnesses before he could flee and was handed over to the police. The driver was identified as Jamshed, a native of Alwar in Rajasthan. A case of rash and negligent driving causing death was registered against him.
