Vibhuti Narain Rai, a 1975 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was quoted in the literary magazine Naya Gyanodaya as having compared women writers in Hindi to prostitutes.

HRD minister Kapil Sibal summoned the VC on Tuesday, and is understood to have pulled him up for his comments.

A group of women writers led by CPM leader Brinda Karat also met Sibal, demanding Rai's removal as VC.

Rai was then told by the ministry to apologise unconditionally or face the prospect of disciplinary action.
