“If a teacher fails to turn up for exam duty from this year, the executive council will take appropriate action against him/her,” said Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental.

“Refusing to do exam work will also reflect on a teacher’s service book and affect his promotion. Irrespective of whether they are paid or not, teachers have to do exam work,” said Pental.

The university is struggling to put in place certain exam reforms in order to ensure that results are released on time. One of the biggest challenges for it is to find teachers willing to evaluate answer sheets.

In a presentation to the academic council in July 2008, Pental had mentioned that 1,928 teachers had regretted or refused examination work in 2007, the highest number being 506 teachers of English. Also, at least 435 paper setters had regretted or not attended meetings for paper setting work for the 2008 annual exams.

“Scripts cannot be taken home. Examiners will have to correct scripts in the centralised locations,” he said. “This will ensure that all scripts are returned on time and not misplaced.”

A centralised system has already proved successful in the Law Faculty.

“We put in place a centralised system, wherein all teachers had to come to college to correct copies,” said S.N. Singh, Dean, Law Faculty, DU. “We did face resistance from teachers but once they realised that there was no way out, they came around,” Singh said.
