Delhi may have had an unprecedented turnout this time, but there were many others who thought there were better things to do. While most said the lack of good candidates prevented them from voting, others just forgot, or wanted to enjoy the day.
“I did not vote because I forgot there were elections today,” said Deepali Sharma, a media professional. “Moreover, even if I wanted to, I am not privileged with a holiday. The terror attacks in Mumbai are the only thing on my mind. Since I am working 12 hours a day, I get little time to do anything else,” she explained.
Many others said they lacked faith in the country’s politicians after the high death toll in Mumbai. “It is a complete shame. How can politicians even think of holding elections? Elections should have been canceled today. That is why I boycotted elections,” said Manju Sharma, a resident of Rohini.
Students of JNU complained the ongoing exams left them with no time to hit the polling booths. “I am a registered voter but I have an exam on Monday. How can our university be so irresponsible,” whined Priyanka Chakravarty.
Many did not vote simply because they could not care less. “I went to play golf. Why should I waste a holiday? Moreover, I do not support any party. Even if I voted for nobody, it is not as if there would be anarchy. Ultimately, one of these parties would come to power anyway. What is the use?” asked Nipun Sharma, an employee of Adobe.
Page 3 regulars were no better. Fashion designer Anjalee Kapoor said she did not vote because she and her friends agreed to boycott elections.
“One is worse than the other. You know, on Wednesday, a couple of us were at a movie when I received a SMS that there has been a terror attack in Mumbai. None of us reacted. Lives are being lost, as the politician stands to watch. All of them are the same. What is the point?” she asked.
