Voting process for soldiers to be simplified

The Election Commission today pledged to make it easy for military personnel to vote in elections in the world's largest democracy.

The Election Commission on Thursday pledged to make it easy for military personnel to vote in elections in the world's largest democracy.

Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla and his colleagues made the promise to officers and soldiers of the army at forward areas in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir.

"The Commission assured the officers and jawans that (it) will consider and implement various measures to simplify the voting process to ensure their participation in the electoral process," said a statement from the poll panel.

Accompanying Chawla were Election Commissioners SY Quraishi and VS Sampath.

"The Commission interacted with the officers and troops in Uri Sector to acquire a first hand appreciation of the problems faced by the soldiers in taking an active part in the electoral process," said the statement.

The soldiers shared with the Commission the difficulties they faced in exercising their right to vote.

The issues discussed included the postal ballot, proxy voting and issue of election Photo Identity Cards.
