And the mercury is headed south.

According to the weatherman, the mercury might dip to 5 degrees Celsius by Wednesday.

“The snowfall in higher in upper reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir has brought down the temperature,” the duty officer at Safdarjung Met office said. Tuesday's minimum temperature was two degrees below normal.

The maximum temperature was at 21.2, again the lowest maximum temperature so far.

For Delhi, this was a fourth consecutive day of chill, starting Saturday when the mercury had dipped to 7.7 degrees Celsius.

"Usually the temperatures start dipping really fast by Christmas. With the clear sky and nippy winds for the past few days, we hope the chilly weather is well on its way," said Anup Kumar (36), a resident of Green Park Extension.

"The constant wind kept stinging like needle," said Akhilesh Tripathy, a Shakarpur resident. The weatherman has predicted mist in the morning with maximum and minimum likely to hover around 21 and six degrees Celsius, respectively, tomorrow.

In 2008, the lowest minimum of the month was 6.4 degree Celsius recorded on December 26, while in 2007, it was 3.9 degrees on December 29. The record for 2006 was 7.3 degree Celsius on November 29.

The all-time record for minimum temperature was recorded on December 26 of 1945 when the mercury dipped to 1.1 degrees Celsius.
