The accused raped the woman on the pretext of giving her a lift.

He took a detour, drove around for three hours, sexually assaulted her and fled the scene after dumping her, police said.

The woman, after mustering enough courage, called the police around 5 am on Friday from her mobile phone. It took the police another two hours to trace her in Dwarka, Sector 24.

The woman who belongs to West Bengal had gone to the bar — Pegs N Pints — in Chanakyapuri on Thursday night to celebrate Christmas. She was reportedly alone.

Police said when the woman was leaving the bar around 1.30 am on Friday, the accused approached her and offered to drop her home.

“The woman has told us that she had not met this person before. She lives barely two kilometres away from the bar, so she agreed being dropped home by the accused,” said a senior police officer.

“The man however took her to NH-8, raped her and then drove around for other two hours before dumping her at Sector 24 in Dwarka," said the officer.

Police said the woman has identified the accused as one “Raj” who is said to be in mid thirties.

“She has not been able to tell us about the make of the car or the identity of the person. We have seized the CCTV footage from the Chanakyapuri bar to identify this person,” said the officer.

“In the footage she is seen talking with this person but it has not been of much help,” he said.

Police is trying to prepare a sketch of the accused with the help of the footage and the details provided by the victim.

Police said after the woman was traced in Dwarka, she was taken to Safdarjung Hospital where it was confirmed that she had been raped.

A case was subsequently registered at Dwarka (north) police station. Police said no traces of alcohol were found in her blood.

“She vaguely remembers the registration number of the vehicle and the one provided by her did not bear any result," said the officer.

The woman is an active member of civil defence — a group of volunteers who are called on by the government in cases of natural calamities and disasters — and is living alone in the city.

Police sources said there was a “jurisdictional tussle” between the Chanakyapuri and Dwarka police on registering a case.

“As soon as the matter was reported a case was registered at Dwarka,” said Ajay Kashyap, joint commissioner of police (southern range).
