In their first catch this year, the police on Thursday night caught a 25-year-old woman who was driving an i10 car, allegedly in a drunk condition near V3S Mall in Laxmi Nagar in east Delhi. Another person in the car, who was sitting beside her, was also drunk, the police said.

A resident of Vivek Vihar, the duo had gone to attend a party. Apart from being drunk, the woman violated many other rules - she was found without a driving licence, insurance and registration certificate, the police said.

The police claimed that the alcometer test found she had 95mg of alcohol content in 100 gm of blood. The permissible limit is 30mg in 100 gm of blood.

"This is the first incident this year in which a woman drunk driver was caught. With this, our impression that women are generally safe and responsible drivers have changed," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

She was slapped with a fine of Rs 3,000, the police said.

After some recent incidents, the police have started using women constables to check and prosecute women drivers for violations such as drunk driving and red light jumping.

In the first month of the year, as many as 528 women were caught and challaned for red light jumping, said Garg.

"Women drivers cause less than 2% of all fatal road mishaps in the city," he said.
