The deceased has been identified as Swarnkanta. She lived with her husband, Jag Mohan, 90, at house number 228 in AGCR Enclave near the Karkardooma Courts Complex.

A senior police officer said neighbours of the elderly couple noticed smoke coming out of their house around 9pm. They informed the fire control room and two fire tenders reached the spot.

The flames were brought under control within minutes. The couple was found unconscious in their room.

"Both of them were immediately rushed to the hospital where Swarnkanta was pronounced dead on arrival. However her husband is critical," said a police officer.
