Prof. Anita Rampal, head and dean, Faculty of Education, University of Delhi, fielded admission-hopefuls' queries about the BElEd and BEd programmes. Here are excerpts reproduced from the transcript of her web chat organised by the university:
I did my Class XII through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Can I take admissions to the above courses in Delhi University? Do you give any weightage for NCC?
Sure, you can take admission to BElEd though there is no weightage for NCC. Look up our website (www.du.ac.in, http://cie.du.ac.in/) for more information.
Is any coaching required for getting into BElEd?
No. See the website (http://cie.du.ac.in/) for sample questions. We expect candidates to be aware of issues in education and to be keen on teaching young children.
Can we include EVS in best-of-four subjects?
Look up the prospectus on our website - all the details will be there.
What is the process for becoming a professor after taking a BElEd degree?
It's very good to have such ambitions! The course prepares you for teaching at the elementary stage, which is till Class VIII. To become a professor, you will need to do an MEd, a Master's, and PhD to become a colleague of ours.
I passed Class XII with agriculture as a subject. Am I eligible for BElEd?
That depends on your other subjects. You have to have read subjects that are taught at elementary school.
Can gap-year aspirants apply? If yes, how much will you deduct from my percentage?
No marks are deducted for a gap year. You need to take the entrance exam and appear for the interview and if you clear, we will admit you.
What is the syllabus for BEIED?
Look up the website for sample questions. We cover all areas such as language comprehension in both Hindi and English, mathematical thinking, science and social science for the written test and for the interview, a more general approach towards understanding children, children's literature, and issues in education.
If I do maths honours (correspondence) in addition to this programme, will it be easy to find a job as a math teacher?
You can take maths as your liberal option for second and third years in BElEd and specialise in this subject, along with pedagogy courses. You cannot do two courses at the same time.
What is the medium of the BElED programme?
This is a bilingual course. So, you can choose either Hindi or English.
From where can I buy the application form for BElED?
From ten branches of State Bank of India. The list is on the website.
What is the difference between BElEd and BEd?
BEd is a one-year course which focuses on secondary education. You need a Bachelor's or Master's degree for it while you can join BElEd straight after school.
Should I do graduation and then go for BEd or simply go for BEIEd?
Good question! You have to find out about your interests. If you are eager to work with young children, then join BElEd.
What is the scope of BElEd?
It is a very good professional education course which is now being promoted all over the country. You can become a teacher at the elementary stage and teach from Classes I to VIII, or you can go on to study for a Master's in some subjects and then come for your MEd and PhD at the university and become a teacher educator
You can also work with organisations dealing with children or join the government.
Are forms for BEIEd available?
Yes, till June 9.
Is the course available only for women?
Right now, it is only taught in women's colleges but we hope, it is going to be started in Dyal Singh College, which is co-educational, if not this year, then by next year.
