IIT-Delhi extends arm to Sonepat

Centre to boast of a science and technology park and a faculty development centre

The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi ( IIT-D) plans to set up an extended campus in Rajiv Gandhi education city at Rai in Sonepat district. The extended centre in Sonepat will be spread over an area of 50 acres and comprise a science and technology park and a facultydevelopment centre.

Haryana government has offered a few sites to IIT-Delhi and the institute has short-listed one in the Rajiv Gandhi Education City and one in Jhajjar, the same area where All India Institute of Medical Sciences is coming up with its second campus at a cost of Rs. 1000 crore.

Inquiries from IIT Delhi revealed that the apex technology institute is yet to come up with a detailed plan. “We are waiting to take possession. Once that happens, concrete plans will be known,” a senior official said on condition of anonymity.

However, the extended campus will focus on research, especially innovative research, and comprise a science and technology park and a faculty development centre where continued education programmes will be offered to the faculty, the official said.

Member of Parliament, Deepender Singh Hooda, who is also the lone parliamentarian member of IIT advisory council, submitted the letter from the IIT Delhi, director professor RK Shevgaonkar to the chief minister of Haryana Bhupinder Singh Hooda at a rally this weekend. In the letter, Shevgaonkar has said that the extension campus of IIT Delhi in Haryana would not only facilitate the expansion of activities of IIT Delhi, but would also provide an additional impetus to the economic growth of Haryana.
