IPU opens a new avenue for commerce aspirants
Delhi-based Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University plans to start the 2013-14 session with new features — the most important one being a BCom (hons) course.education Updated: Mar 06, 2013 13:38 IST
Students aiming for a BCom (hons) degree have one more avenue open. Delhi-based Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) is going to start the 2013-14 year with new features, including a BCom (hons) course.
The three-year course is to be offered at affiliated institutions applying for it. Each college is likely to get 60 seats, the total number depending on the institutes finally offering the course. The reasons for launching a new programme are the university’s focus on professional education and market demand.
“There’s a glut of BBAs in the markets,” says Dilip K Bandyopadhyay, vice chancellor, GGSIPU. Last year, about 500-600 of the 5600 sanctioned seats for BBA remained vacant at the university’s affiliated institutes on the outskirts of the city, he says. (Institutes in central locations could fill up the seats, he adds.) So, institutes may apply to replace the BBA with the BCom (hons), for a combination of the two or to continue with the BBA.
To apply for the BCom (hons) entrance test, aspirants need 50% marks in aggregate in Class 12 or equivalent with a pass in five subjects (one language and four elective subjects). The 2.5-hour entrance test, due on June 8, 3013, will cover general English (25% weight), logical reasoning (25%), data interpretation (35%) and basic general awareness (15%). The result is expected to be out on June 17, 2013.
The authorities propose to teach an induction module to enrolees who have not studied mathematics and computer science of an adequate level in school. Further, they intend to make an arrangement with the respective professional bodies such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, the Institute of Cost Accountants of India and the Institute of Company Secretaries of India so that students may also pursue chartered accountancy, cost accounting or company secretaryship courses.
Other changes in this admission cycle include scrapping of the personal interview for the MBA course and introduction of online counselling, in collaboration with National Informatics Centre, for BTech and MBA admissions.
GGSIPU has also decided to turn the PG diploma in education leadership and management, launched last year, into a weekend course from this year - given the commitments of the target students.
New school of design
Besides, it is developing a 19-acre east campus at Surajmal Vihar to house a proposed Integrated School of Design, which will include the faculty of architecture and planning (Its School of Architecture and Planning is currently based at the Kashmere Gate campus). The integrated institute is going to offer courses in manufacturing, textile and product design. “We are in a dialogue with NID (National Institute of Design), Ahmedabad, for curriculum development and faculty training,” informs Bandyopadhyay. Construction is to start this year, he says.
Seats on offer
In the university’s various schools, Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, government institutes and self-financing colleges/institutes in Delhi, 85% of the seats are for Delhi region candidates, that is, those who have passed the qualifying examination from a school/institute located in Delhi or from a college/ institute affiliated to GGSIP University. At these schools/institutes, 15% of the sanctioned seats are for candidates who have passed the qualifying examination from a school/institute located outside Delhi.
In the case of institutions located outside Delhi in the national capital region, admission will be on a national basis. This year, in the defence quota, wards of ex-servicemen and serving personnel have been kept in one category.
