JNU to reopen for PwD category PhD scholars from Monday

As part of its phase-wise reopening, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Saturday allowed PhD scholars from People with Disabilities category of Science schools and centres to return from December 21.

As part of its phase-wise reopening, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Saturday allowed PhD scholars from People with Disabilities category of Science schools and centres to return from December 21. The admin, in a circular, said both day scholars and hostellers from this category needed access to labs will be allowed to return, and reiterated that JNU’s central library, canteens and dhabas will remain closed.

Outstation students will have to undergo a seven-day self-quarantine before entering the campus. Students have also been advised to install the Aarogya Setu app and wear masks and gloves while working in the labs.

The JNU students’ union has, however, opposed the move and will hold a demonstration on the campus on Monday demanding the return of students from non-science backgrounds as well. They have also been demanding the reopening of the library, dhabas and mess for all hostellers.

Vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar said JNU took the decision consulting the university Covid-19 monitoring committee and based on guidelines of the ministry of home affairs. “We are concerned about the safety of students, if they come in large numbers. We can allow more students once the Covid-19 situation improves,” he said.
