This is the biggest mandate since Independence, said BJP chief Amit Shah, addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Delhi. The party is leading in more than 300 seats in the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh. Shah said the BJP will form government in four states -- UP, Manipur, Goa and Uttarakhand. “The people accepted politics of performance. This historic mandate will take the country in a new direction,” said Shah. “Move past Hindu-Muslim, a voter is a voter,” he told the gathering. “Politics of development should take place.” The results will be seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies, including the shock recall of 500-and 1000-rupee banknotes. Shah said the people’s faith in the prime minister had only increased after the demonetisation move.
