Karaikudi comes under the Sivaganga district and it is one of the 232 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Constituencies . People of Karaikudi voted for Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2021 on April 6 and the result was declared on May 2.

Indian National Congress's Ramasamy Kr won the election by upstaging All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's Karpagam Ilango by a margin of 18,283 votes.
The top two candidates split 84.8% of votes between them. Indian National Congress's Ramasamy Kr got a total of 93,419 votes, while All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's Karpagam Ilango secured 75,136 votes. Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's candidate Sevanthiappan S secured 14,279 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties got 47.0%, 37.8% and 7.2% respectively.
In Tamil Nadu Assembly election 2011, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's Palanichamy.Cholan.Ct defeated Indian National Congress's Ramasamy.Kr by 18,900 votes.
