UP polls: Mayawati calls for high voter turnout to bring back ‘tried and tested' BSP govt

BSP chief Mayawati said that higher number of votes will ensure Uttar Pradesh gets rid of the “casteist, communal…hateful and arrogant thinking government”.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati took to Twitter on Monday, calling for “massive participation” of voters in the seventh and final phase of assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh so that the “tried and tested BSP government” can be formed in the state. In a series of posts on the micro-blogging site, the former chief minister said her party is dedicated to public interest and welfare, and “free from deceit and misrepresentation”.

“Everyone's interest is protected only in BSP government,” one of her tweets, roughly translated from Hindi, read.

Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) ruling dispensation in Uttar Pradesh as well as the former Samajwadi Party (SP) regime, Mayawati further stated that higher number of votes will ensure the northern state gets rids of the “casteist, communal…hateful and arrogant thinking government”.

“[The government] in whose mill people have been grinding for the past decade waiting for 'acche din', and trusting either the SP or the BJP,” she wrote in a tweet, adding that trusting the BSP is “only justified”.

The BSP chief said that her party's “excellent” record of “Baate kum aur kaam adhik” (talk less and work more) in the last four reigns in Uttar Pradesh is present before the public with “direct evidence”.

She appealed to the entire society of the northern state to continue the “sincere effort to make a better Uttar Pradesh” with the resolution of “Har polling booth ko jeetana hai, BSP ko satta mein lana hain (Make every polling booth win, bring BSP to power)”.

Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath also appealed to the public to exercise their votes in the final phase of polling. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav also pushed for casting more votes.

As many as 54 assembly constituencies spread over nine districts are voting today. These include Varanasi, Azamgarh, Mau, Bhadohi, Chandauli, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Jaunpur, and Ghazipur. The focus will be on Azamgarh and Varanasi which is Akhilesh's Lok Sabha and PM Modi's parliamentary constituencies, respectively.

After the voting ends at 6pm today, preparations for counting of the votes on March 10 will commence. Besides Uttar Pradesh, results of assembly elections of four other states - Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur, will be announced on the day.
