Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said that the public will throw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) across the seven seas (“saat samandar paar”) in the seventh and final phase of the UP polls to be held on March 7.

Akhilesh Yadav was addressing a public meeting in his parliamentary constituency Azamgarh, considered a Samajwadi Party stronghold. Despite the BJP wave back then, the SP had won five out of 10 assembly seats in Azamgarh in 2017.

This time, the Samajwadi Party will win all 10 seats and no other party will be able to open its account in Azamgarh, (in the UP polls), he said. Azamgarh votes in the last phase on March 7. Saturday was the last day of campaigning for the UP polls.

Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of making false promises to the people. He mentioned the BJP’s promise to double farmers’ income by 2022.

While the farmers’ income hasn’t doubled, inflation has added to their problems, he said.

Yadav also accused the BJP government of failing to provide employment to educated youngsters. In every house, there is an unemployed youth, he said.

The Samajwadi Party president took a jibe at BJP leaders and workers wearing saffron caps during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s roadshow in Varanasi on Friday.

He pointed out that BJP leaders had earlier criticised the red cap of the Samajwadi Party and did “injustice” with people wearing white caps. Now, they themselves have worn caps of another colour, he said.

These are the people who are experts in changing colour, he said, adding that the public has decided to teach them a lesson.

Yadav appealed to the people to vote for the SP candidates in the seventh phase.

He promised that agricultural mandis (marts) will be built along roads so that farmers can sell their produce there and get good prices.

Reacting to the SP chief’s remarks, BJP spokesman Manish Shukla said, “Akhilesh ji arrived into these polls talking about Jinnah and now as the elections are about to conclude with a clear wave in BJP’s favour, he appears to have lost the plot completely.”
