'You are Didi of extremist Muslims': Madhya Pradesh BJP MLA to Mamata Banerjee
In a tweet, Adhikari claimed that Banerjee had "wrongly recited" the mantra and was hence "insulting Bengal's culture".
Taking a potshot at West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee over her recitation of mantras from the Chandipath, Madhya Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Rameshwar Sharma on Wednesday said she is no longer "Didi of Hindus" and has become the "Didi of extremist Muslims".
"You (Mamata Banerjee) allowed Namaz at intersections and got Durga pandals removed, overlooked 'Dharma' for radical Muslims from Bangladesh. It's too late for 'Chandi Path'. You're no more Didi of Hindus, you're Didi of extremist Muslims," Sharma told news agency ANI.
Hours after Banerjee proudly exclaimed that she is "a Hindu girl" and recited mantras from the Chandipath to back her statement, her challenger Suvendu Adhikari accused of her chanting the wrong mantra.
In a tweet, Adhikari claimed that Banerjee had "wrongly recited" the mantra and was hence "insulting Bengal's culture".
"This is how Mamata Banerjee is insulting Bengal’s culture again and again. The one who insults Bengal is not wanted by the people of Bengal," he added.
On Tuesday, Banerjee started her two-day visit to Nandigram. During her visit, she addressed a gathering of TMC workers where she hit back at BJP's charge of being 'anti-Hindu'. "I am a born Hindu. No one should question my identity. But I don't believe in dividing communities on religious lines. If anyone has any doubt about my religion, I challenge them to a debate and competition on reciting Hindu shlokas. Khela Hobe (the game is on)," she said and recited a few shlokas before the crowd.
Banerjee is pitted against her former confidante Suvendu Adhikari, who joined the BJP some time ago, in the high-profile Nandigram seat that will go to poll on April 1 in the second phase.
