Nikhil Taneja..

What made you take up

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

I was in two minds when I got the offer. But we all dance at parties and family functions. So, there’s no harm in trying it out. Life is too short.. you should have as much fun as you can.

How did your family react to the decision?

(Chuckles) They thought I was acting crazy. Then they said, why not? Because they realised that I’m not here to compete.. I’m only here to learn. I just don’t want to disappoint my teacher, Lilian Mendes.

Do you usually dance?

All Indians love to dance and sing, and I’m no exception. Besides, Punjabis have it inborn in them.. they can’t help shaking a leg at any celebration.

A song you love to dance on?

If I know the lyrics and the song well, it becomes easier to dance with feeling. It could be any song.. Hindi, English or Punjabi. It has to have rhythm, language, great poetry and emotions and I can dance to it. But I do admit that if it’s a Punjabi song, dance comes naturally to me.

Have you managed to find any similarity between cricket and dancing?

(Smiles) Yes, I have found similarities. In cricket, it all depends on your rhythm, body balance and footwork. You have to play your strokes in the right direction. Plus, you need to go out there and give your best shot. Dance is no different.

Who was the best dancer in the 1983 World Cup winning team?

There were many Punjabis in that team and all of us did bhangra the entire night in London. Southhall has a lot of Punjabis and they all joined us in the celebration.

Was there anyone in that team who couldn’t dance?

(Chuckles) Everybody could shake a leg.. but somehow, I don’t recall having seen Sunil Gavaskar ever dance.

Your trademark cricketing shot was ‘hooking the ball’. Do you have a trademark dancing style too?

(Laughs) No, no.. I’m very new at this. I can do

, but I’m learning things like salsa, rock ‘n’ roll, jive and other dances which I have never done before.

Is there any cricketing stroke or style that can be used as a dance style?

(Laughs) I don’t think a stroke can be used in the two minutes we get to dance. But the footwork that we use while playing a shot definitely comes in handy.

If cricket is a gentleman’s game, dance is..

Dance is plain fun. Mohinder Amarnath is known as a serious man who doesn’t smile much. Dance is going to change that.

In real life, whom would you like to dance with?

Govinda is my favourite.. I love watching him dance. The joy and emotion which is reflected through his dancing is amazing. Hrithik Roshan is brilliant too.

Who are the best dancers in

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

All the guys and girls are good but I really enjoy watching Hard Kaur. She is really fun and is my favourite. I think Anand Raj Anand is really nice too.

Will you be open to another reality show post

I don’t know. I’m just taking it one day at a time. My idea is to work really hard and enjoy every moment.

I’m getting to meet young people from different fields who enjoy each other’s company and pull each other’s legs. I want to have fun and I just don’t want to disappoint my teacher, Lilian.
