Bombay Elektrik Projekt celebrates first anniversary of Bombay Shorts

Fifteen short movies were screened marking the success of the event; short films festival to follow in the year.

Bombay Elektrik Projekt (BEP), a trio of three art and culture enthusiasts, that’s been regularly holding music gigs and other cultural events across the city for more than a year now, celebrated the first anniversary of its short film screening event, Bombay Shorts, on December 28, at Cafe Goa.

Bombay Shorts was started in December 2008 to screen short movies by local filmmakers, since there was no avenue for it. From screening three amateur short films at the first screening to screening over 120 films in one year, from professionals, the event has clearly been a huge success. “We decided to start screening shorts since there was no place where local filmmakers could showcase their talent,” says Sudeip Nair, co-founder of BEP, along with Kenneth Lobo and Pramod Sippy. “It’s evolved into an event where people get together to discuss cinema. Nobody is small or big – it’s an informal gathering of cinema fans.”

On the first anniversary, nine local short films were screened and a website, that would feature various short movies from all over the world, Cinemaa.com, was also launched. “The response was really great yesterday. The event has evolved from one featuring cinema fans to people from the film industry as well, who offer their unique perspective on movies. We’ve even screened movies from filmmakers whose short films have made it to film festivals and awards abroad.” BEP has also tied up with a German film festival called Asian Hot Shorts. They have catalogued the 120 films they’ve screened till now, and plan to do a nation-wide short film festival in the next six months.
