Yes, there was a time when Delhi had a tram service, just like Kolkata (then Calcutta), which preceded it as Imperial India’s capital before 1911.

Yes, there was a time when Delhi had a tram service, just like Kolkata (then Calcutta), which preceded it as Imperial India’s capital before 1911. The tram service was set up in Delhi in 1903, the year electric power arrived in the city.

18 years later, Delhi had 24 tramcars and 15km of track. The trams would putter from Jama Masjid to Sadar Bazaar, along Esplanade Road, Chandni Chowk and Fatehpuri Masjid. Another line started at Jama Masjid and snaked through Chawri Bazaar, Hauz Kazi and Lal Kuan, before turning to Fatehpuri. Now, there are none.
