Chuck, AC and Jimbo are three New York homeboys — or to use the slang for buddies properly, homeboyz. The only thing you need to catch on in the inaugural DSC Prize for South Asian Literature winner HM Naqvi’s slim book Home Boy is that the three rollicking characters are Pakistanis living in the Big Apple. It’s post-9/11 but the hilarity doesn’t pall.
Protagonist Chuck adapts extremely well to the American life and snorts (coke), chases (skirts) and kicks back (alcohol) — until the FBI pick him and his two buddies up. Written in a cool, gangland- style, Naqvi’s debut novel is a rush of life and language in the hood.
