Meet Bollywood’s professor brigade

Actor Soha Ali Khan has been invited by the acclaimed Harvard University to deliver a lecture on Hindi cinema, later this month. Take a look at other B’wood celebs, who also donned professor’s hats.

Soha Ali Khan
Where: Harvard University, UK

Actor Soha Ali Khan, 32, has been invited by the acclaimed Harvard University to deliver a lecture on Hindi cinema, later this month, in an interactive session titled Cinema — Then and Now. She will be joined by her mother, actor Sharmila Tagore. Soha, was quoted as saying, "I’m quite excited about my Harvard visit. I have done a thorough research and will touch upon landmark films, directors and actors including Meena Kumari, Madhubala and my mom, who have made huge contributions in shaping up Indian cinema."

R Madhavan
Where: Where: Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

Actor R Madhavan, 40, took a guest lecture at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, on film industry dynamics. The actor, who took the lecture on February 23, this year, was a visiting faculty for an elective course called Contemporary Film Industry — a Business Perspective. After the class, Madhavan was quoted as saying, “I always wanted to study at IIM-A, so coming here to teach as a visiting faculty is a matter of great pride to me.”

Expert Talk: “Maddy always has fun anecdotes to share so his journey in the industry can be very interesting for students,” says Kakkar.

Shriya Saran
Where: Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

Actor Shriya Saran, 28, took a one-day guest lecture for IIT Madras students on the history of films, and films as a medium of cultural exchange. During the lecture, which took place on January 30, this year, Saran also discussed about piracy and why it should be discouraged. After her session, Shriya tweeted, “was at iit madras n it was a fabulous experience.. (sic)”. Last year, Saran impressed the IIM Ahmedabad students with her lecture on the importance of insurance and marketing in films.

Expert Talk: “She is young, articulate, has a perceptive towards the glamour field, and a journey to share,” says filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.

Preity ZintaPreity Zinta

Where: Oxford Union, UK

Actor Preity Zinta, 36, shared her experiences as a successful actor in the Hindi film industry when she got an opportunity to address students at the world’s most prestigious debating society, Oxford Union, in October last year. Preity shared her experiences of being part of the world’s largest film industry and how does it feel as a woman to be a part of Bollywood, which is a totally male dominated industry.

Expert Talk: “Preity is not just an actress but also an entrepreneur. She can be a great inspiration,” says Kakkar.

Vidya Balan
Where: Wharton India Economic Forum, Pennsylvania

Actor Vidya Balan, 33, was one of the panelists at the 14th Wharton India Economic Forum, organised by the Wharton business school, in March, last year. She spoke about the globalisation of Mainstream Indian Cinema, how Indian films are attracting international audiences, and how Hollywood production houses have also started producing Indian films.

Expert Talk: “Vidya’s success journey from TV and ad world to Bollywood is something that many would be interested in,” says Bhatt.
