Actor Imran Khan, 28, has dismissed allegations that he delayed filing a public interest litigation against the Maharashtra government’s decision to raise the legal age of drinking from 21 to 25 in order to time it with his new film, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, for publicity.
The actor, who announced his plan to file the PIL before the release of his last film Delhi Belly in June, filed the litigation only on Wednesday.
Khan says his move got delayed because of the Right to Information application he had filed for clarity on the issue. “It took longer than I had anticipated. Through RTI, we got to know that there was an amendment to the law in 2005, which raised the drinking age to 25, but no one was aware of it. So, the government was trying to pass a law that had already been passed, and I’m challenging the original amendment.”
