It’s universal now, so let’s face it — there are only two occasions in a year that city dwellers look forward to. First, their appraisal time and second the Sale season. But courtesy some brands, atleast the second is available throughout the year. Not only that, with astounding figures like ‘90% discount’ or ‘50%+20% off’, they are sure grab your attention. But are they worth it?
Anytime on anything
“You can come anytime of the year and get stuff on discount here,” says Yogesh Hingorani, franchisee of the Allen Cooper store in Connaught Place, who attributes the phenomena as a “company policy”. And they are not alone. While it’s time for almost all major brands to wrap up their summer sale season, these ‘all-time’ brands will continue with their discounts.
So how good it is for shoppers? “Logon ke liye achha hi hai, har time pe saamaan sasta milega,” says Gopal, a sales executive at a Cantabil outlet. And he isn’t wrong. “Van Heusen or Wills Lifestyle shirts offer same colours that I can get here,” says Naina Singh, 25. “And if I have to shop every year, why should I spend so much 90% off works fine for me,” she adds.
But what’s even more striking about these stores, is the amount of discount. With shirts labelled at R 1,999 and being sold at R 300, it does make you think if you are reading right or is the product offered right. “That is the way we do it, and it works,” says an executive at the Cobbs store, that has 90% off all through.
Win some-lose some
“Everyone knows the difference between them [the all-time sales] and other brands,” says Mohini, store manager, Allen Solly. “The quality that is available there is just no comparison to ours, and shoppers know that,” adds Rohit Prasad of Woodlands. Though Vishal Vali of Levis agrees that such discounts do attract the eyes, they’re no competition. “The credibility is lost if we keep giving discounts the entire year, that too such unimaginable figures,” says Vali.
Though the credibility of the brand is an issue, here’s a point to ponder upon. “These big brands sit idle for the entire year, while we keep the sale going,” says Hingorani. “Who cares about brand then?”
