The Capital’s favourite mode of transport makes its debut on stage in a performance by a city-based troupe.entertainment Updated: Mar 10, 2011 01:07 IST
Metro, the lifeline of Delhi might be a mode of transportation for many, but for young dancers at Bhoomika Dance Academy it’s the theme for their new choreography. Metro! Metro!, a 40-minute long dance performance, depicts the change that metro has brought in the life of every Delhiite. The act will be performed on March 11 at Sri Ram Centre.
“Metro has brought a whole new culture change in the Capital, it’s one thing that is related to every Delhiite in some way or the other,” says Bharat Sharma, the choreographer of the act.
Performed by 12 dancers, the act has many sub acts. The presentation opens with the evolution of wheel, then turns to the construction scene that took place in the Capital due to Metro, then comes the inauguration drama and finally to what people are upto in the Metro: sleeping, talking on phone, fighting and couples spending some personal time.
“The various acts in the performance explore incidents and behaviour patterns around Metro’s daily run. Even the music is peppy and upbeat,” says Sharma.
Interestingly, there is no particular dance form that has been picked for this choreography. It’s a mix of many dance forms that the choreographer specifically loves to point out as ‘contemporary dance form’.
Metro! Metro! is the inaugural act for a three-day-long dance festival that celebrates modern and contemporary choreography. Celebrating its second year in the Capital, the Narendra Sharma Dance Festival will also see performances by Sadhya and Anveshna Dance Group. These troupes will be focusing on themes like human emotions, women in today’s world and Gandhism.
