Move over those glitzy reds and maroons. For fashion forward girls getting hitched this season, ivory is the hottest colour on the block for their bridal outfit. Designers in the city are flooded with orders from would-be brides who want to experiment with ivory instead of traditional colours.
Fashion designer Meera Ali, who has plenty of ivory outfits in her trousseau collection this year, explains the trend. “With globalisation and a change in mindset, brides are now willing to bend rules. We are making a large number of bridal outfits which are not red, pink or orange, but white, ivory and beige,” says Meera.
Experts feel that people now want a break from an overdose of bling and colour. “For the past couple of years, everything has been loud and blingy. People are looking for a change now. Ivory is the need of the hour. Today’s women don’t follow tradition blindly and want to look different on their special day. There’s something very pure, sacred and austere about ivory,” says designer Anand Kabra.
Agrees designer Anupamaa Dayal, “It’s a beautiful colour. It’s lovely to see muted version of brides at Indian weddings.”
Designer Rina Dhaka points out that it’s a re-run of the ‘90s trend. “People want cleaner, plainer and statement clothes over just shine and kitsch,” she says.
Even lehenga shops in the city are cashing in on the trend. “Ivory demand mein hai aaj kal. Earlier, it was popular with elite customers, but now even middle class brides want ivory lehenga,” says Manish Kapoor of Malhotra Brothers, South Ex.
“White lehengas bahut chal rahe hain. People were superstitious about white earlier, but not anymore,” says Rajan Bansal of Kalashree Regalia, Chandni Chowk.
“This is such a cool trend, I have been looking at some ivory outfits for my wedding next month,” says Kanika Sinha, 25.
Add fun to your look
You can add a pop of colour to your look with jewellery and flowers. “Ivory takes on jewellery beautifully — be it diamond, kundan or gold,” says designer Anand Kabra. “Go for contrasting jewellery. Also, silver and gold look great with ivory,” adds designer Rina Dhaka. “You can quirk up your attire with fresh flowers to add texture and colour. Wear it like jewellery, a tiara or on your arms,” says designer Anupama Dayal.
