International divas are clearly smitten by desi designers.
In the past few months alone, stars such as Selena Gomez and Kim Kardashian have been spotted wearing Indian designers.
Gomez, 19, wears a hot pink dress by Delhi-based designer Manish Arora in her latest video, Love You Like Love Song.
Recently, singer Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls, was seen in a skirt designed by him.
“It gives me great pleasure to see my work appreciated. Selena’s a teen icon and she does complete justice to my outfit,” says Arora.
Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks wore a swimsuit by designer duo Shivan & Narresh for the cover shoot of Beauty magazine.
Earlier this month, reality TV star Kim Kardashian wore an outfit made by Mumbai-based duo Falguni&Shane Peacock for WMB’s cover shoot.
They have also designed for Lady Gaga, Fergie and Jennifer Aniston among others.
“To appeal internationally it’s important that clothes have a global sensibility.
We have found that a mix of Indian and western designs works best for celebrities," says Falguni Peacock.
“How we choose a designer has nothing to do with where he is from, we look for difference and sophistication,” says Memsor Kamarake, the stylist for singers Mary J Blige and Ciara.
Soma Lisa, founder of Leela Agency, which promotes international designers in New York says, “We look for designers from different cultural backgrounds but with European, Western aesthetics.”
