Frieda Pinto has made it to No. 1 on Vogue’s ‘Ten Best Dressed’ list for this week. But, say Indian designers, why is the Slumdog Millionaire star shunning local designers. In India, the actress has worn Abu-Sandeep, Nikhil-Shantanu and Gauri-Nainika, but at international events, she has stepped out in Jean Paul Gaultier, Marchesa, Christian Lacroix and Zac Posen. A rose-coloured Oscar de la Renta gown at the BAFTA this weekend (left) was the latest.

Her stylist George Kotsiopoulos tells HT City that Frieda will wear an international designer for the Oscars, too. “We have chosen an international designer as a first option for the Oscars.” Kerzina D, Frieda’s stylist in India, says. “At international events, George decides what she wears.” Kerzina says Frieda may wear an Indian label at pre-Oscar events.

“With international artists like the Pussycat Dolls and Katy Perry wearing Rocky S and Manish Arora, why won’t she?” asks designer Raakesh Agarvwal. “We also make beautiful gowns, not only saris and lehengas.”

Gauri Karan says, “The aggressiveness with which international labels pursue Oscar-nominated actors is maddening. We cannot compete with that.”

Raghavendra Rathore feels, “It’s a big international event and wearing Indian designers may boomerang. Nobody wants to take a chance. But all the stars make the classic mistake of considering international designers over us. We do not need red carpet events to promote Indian fashion as Indian dresses are being sold worldwide.”
