‘I may just do a special line for India’

Renowned international jewellery designer Mawi Keivom on her return to India.

International celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Rihanna, and even our desi divas like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor have worn Mawi Keivom’s jewellery pieces. She is known for her quirkiness, for mixing the antique look with the punk feel, and for her geometric designs.

The fashion conscious in the city, however, had to travel to London to purchase her creations till last month. But designs by this noted jewellery designer of Indian-origin are up for grabs in the Capital. She finally arrived in Delhi after living and working in UK for 17 years. "I was born in Manipur but established the brand in UK. We wanted to build the brand well in London and the West first. It was only now that we thought the time was right to enter India. It’s been some time since the super brands have been here and people are now ready for independent brands. Also, once you are an established international brand, it is easier to connect with people here," adds Mawi.

She feels that Delhiites are in tune with the latest trends. "I wouldn't rule out doing a special line for India but that could take some time. In India, the craftsmanship is great but the in-house jewellery designers are not thinking out-of-the-box. You have to change as per market requirements," she says.

Her creations are available at Ozel in Greater Kailash I and are priced from R15,000 upwards.
