Many moods of red: Got a favourite?

The little and long versions of the classic black dress have given way to reds for summer. While the flaming hue has an inherent sense of sexy, we felt all kinds of blue after seeing some of these. What’s your favourite?

It’s been a month of beautiful dresses — from Kate Middleton’s visit to India and Bhutan to major movie premieres making their fashionable mark, there’s lots of style inspiration for those who are bringing in colour into their wardrobes this month. The red dress is one of such sights that’s been soothing (most of the times) to the eyes. From the floor-sweeping variant to the slinky, risqué versions, while some made the cut, others would have been better left on the racks. Here our favourites and fails of the red dress brigade from the past month.

This pleated silk and chiffon gown by Beulah London made us feel all shades of summer, when the Duchess of Cambridge wore it during her Bhutan visit recently. The dress, which retails for a little over Rs. 70,000, is a win for not only the breezy length , but also the play of pinks and reds against the poppy print that makes it a happy, season-perfect pick.

DOES NOT MAKE THE CUT: not feeling it
It’s one thing to play it sexy, and it’s another to look costume-y. Well, these examples of cut-out gowns range from ill-fitted to fancy dress-perfect, with a wardrobe warning sign looming large. Called the Laleh Cutout Maxi by label Massachi, singer Pia Toscano’s burgundy dress did not do her justice under the flashes of the shutterbugs, and the akward cut-outs did not add anything to the look. For Mexican actor Aislinn Derbez (Wearing Hamel By Melina Harris), it was the same case, albeit the fact that the styling gave us major Morticia Addams vibe , which is usually, not a good thing!

THE MIDI VIBE: playing it safe
Another part of the red brigade is made of midi versions that are just...meh! At a recent event, model Padma Lakshmi, wearing Jonathan Simkhai, made a case in textured separates with a scalloped hem on the top and a dainty fishtail on the skirt. It’s a ‘like’ for us, but no love! Actor Ashley Greene went for a tangerine-laced red (a Narciso Rodriguez design), and there’s no doubt she looked smashin’ in it. The question is, is it anything new? Well, we don’t think so!

SUPERHERO MUCH: Can’t get our heads around this one!
Sonam doesn’t care much for popular perception when it comes to fashion , so props for that! But, this Naeem Khan creation on her has got us confused. We wish we could fall in love with the classic red and the old school glam she aimed for, but the cape and that serious face has us in a fix.

Sonam Kapoor has done better than this Naeem Khan number.
