A new child-only salon in London, and reports of girls as young as eight undergoing a bikini wax. While child beauty is taking over the West, closer home in the Capital, society moms are not far behind.

Salons and clinics in Delhi confirm that moms are enquiring about laser hair removal services for daughters as young as 12. "It’s alarming, but we get around 2-3 enquiries every week from moms who want their 12 to 13-year-olds girls to undergo laser treatments because they don’t want their kids to undergo waxing procedures every month," says Shobha Sehgal, salon manager at VLCC.

saloon"It begins with basic queries about the upper lip and underarms, and goes on to body laser. We try convincing them to wait for few years," says Tarini Hooda, who runs an upmarket laser clinic in Gurgaon.

Apart from these services, pre-pubescent girls are going in for threading, facials and hair treatments. Experts say this practice could be detrimental to overall development. "The onset of puberty now starts at 10-12 years for girls. They also develop secondary sexual characteristics like hair growth early, which pushes them towards vanity. It can have a negative impact as it makes them believe looking good is more important than intellectual growth," feels Dr Gaurav Gupta, a psychiatrist at Apollo Hospital.

"Earlier, the Dermatological society of India had ruled out laser treatments for those under 18, but the revised guidelines have reduced the age to 15," says Dr Hema Pant of Kaya Skin Clinic.

It’s not just girls. “Boys aged 14-15, too, want their skin problems solved,” says Nandita Suri of Levo salon.
