Late last week, Gauri Khan made an appearance for an event in Mumbai, sporting a generous dose of brown streaks on her hair. Hairstylist Aaalim Hakim says, “Gauri’s wispy waves, interspersed with a dash of golden brown made her look younger and edgier. Also, the heavy interplay of golden streaks instead of the whole bottle blonde look made it interesting.”
Hair expert Shanti says, “Be it Rihanna or Katie Holmes, celebs in the West are more open to experimentation. Nowadays, Bollywood divas are also trying new styles, and creating hair trends.”
Stars in the tinsel town don’t shy away from experimenting different hairstyles. We ask the experts to list for us five most interesting hair trends of Bollywood divas this season.
Wispy, layered blunt
Celebrity sporting the look: Priyanka Chopra
About the hairstyle: Shanti says, “It’s a soft wavy look, different from a stiff poker straight blunt cut. The preferred length is above
Looks good on: Hair expert Vikas Marwah says, “The cut goes well with round or slightly oval face. Few shorter layers on the crown of the head and side bangs look great.”
Square layers with heavy highlights
Celebrity sporting the look: Gauri Khan
About the hairstyle: Shanti says, “It’s a ‘classy meets edgy’ look. The length is almost six inches below the shoulders. The heavy highlights add to the dramatic appeal, along with layers that are kept soft.”
Looks good on: Marwah says, “The style looks great on square face with high cheek bones and a pointed chin.”
Grunged up popstar perms
Celebrity sporting the look: Kangana Ranaut
About the hairstyle: “It is an overtly curly, perm look. The length may vary from shoulder to up till the elbows. The curls are kept tight to give a grungy look,” says Shanti.
Looks good on: “It suits people with a small face and petite body frame,” says beauty expert Samantha Kochhar.
Celebrity sporting the look: Shruti Haasan
About the hairstyle: “It’s a style that’s high on feminine charm. While the long length is retained for the back, the forehead fringes are chopped in varying lengths,” shares Shanti.
Looks good on: “Front fringes look nice on long faces and big foreheads,” says beauty expert Meenakshi Dutt.
Outgrown wavy bob
Celebrity sporting it: Lara Dutta
About the hairstyle: “It’s sort of a growing back phase, that follows post a short haircut. The hair is given waves so that it doesn’t look like some overgrown style,” adds Marwah.
Looks good on: Kochhar says, “It’s the perfect hair style and will go perfectly with most facial structures.”
Before going for a hair cut
Professional advise: Be it the sprays, gels or other hair creams, make sure the salon is using best quality products on your hair. It’s always advisable to tell the salon about the products you’re allergic to or should be avoided.
Ask questions: Talk to the stylist about the haircut you need or the products you want to use. Take time to discuss the style, length, colour treatment, maintenance and other things before going for the haircut.
Carry Pictures: It’s always better to take along pictures of the various hairstyles that you like to the salon. This will give the stylist an idea of the style that you want and also, he/she can use these to create the style that is perfect for you.
After care: As much a nice haircut is important, the after care is even more important. Especially with hair colouring, perming and hair straightening, the instructions given by the hair expert should be followed, including the haircare products mentioned by him/her.
