India captain Sunil Chhetri satisfied with his performance in Intercontinental Cup
Sunil Chhetri may have produced an impeccable performance in leading India to the Intercontinental Cup title, but he doesn’t want to feel complacent as he has now set his eyes on helping his team do well in the AFC Asian Cup, to be held in the UAE next January.
“I am very satisfied with the performance of my players as we all wanted to win this tournament. But as I said earlier, it was not about only winning this tournament but looking forward to our preparations for the Asia Cup as well.
“Everything that we do from here is going to be about Asia Cup. How we train, how we take care of our diet, everything needs to be perfect. Everyone of us has to be well prepared for it,” he said.
Coach Stephen Constantine echoed similar views saying India would not be playing in the Asia Cup just to make numbers.
“We are not going there to just make numbers. We have to look to do well there and qualify from the group,” the Englishman said.
The head coach, though, was full praise for his players especially Chhetri who scored a brace to fashion India’s win against Kenya on Sunday.
“I am happy with the way our players played today. The Kenyans put us under pressure in the second half but we did well. I don’t know what would have happened if they had scored 15 minutes before the end but they didn’t because we did really well. I am pleased with the resilience our players have shown.
“Sunil is unbelievable. He is fit and ready to do everything I ask him for. We are always better with him on the field than without him.”
