Areas near MG Road fear flooding after re-carpeting

The numerous malls, residential estates and shopping-cum-commercial complexes located along the 5-km-long Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG) Road run the risk of facing massive waterlogging after the proposed re-carpeting of the stretch, feel local people.
People fear that re-carpeting would put another layer on the road and increase the main carriageway’s thickness. In case of rain, water would flow down to the adjoining areas faster, as has been happening for years.
The news of re-carpeting published in HT on Wednesday has attracted sharp criticism from the locals. “The re-carpeting plan for MG Road is ill-conceived and has not been thought through. MG Road is already 1.5 feet higher than the adjoining colonies like Sushant Lok,” said Sameer Kochhar, an urban planner.
The locals have suggested to the public works department (PWD), which is to start the re-carpeting work shortly, that they should remove the upper layer and bring it down to the level of the localities before starting the re-carpeting.
“Unless the level of the road is brought down and made equal to that of the adjoining colonies before re-carpeting, the problem of flooding will be severe. During the successive re-carpeting efforts and Metro construction, the culvert and drainage system on MG Road has vanished,” added Kochhar.
During the monsoon’s first downpour in June, water flowed down to areas such as Sushant Lok, Heritage City, Sahara Mall DLF, Beverly Park and others because of the uneven slope.
PWD officials, however, assured that there would be no such damages as their plan had provisions for drains along the entire stretch. “We will also remove the upper layer and re-construct the main carriageway,” said NK Tomar, executive engineer, PWD.
