A mock earthquake drill conducted in the city on Thursday failed, exposing the lack of coordination among the civic agencies.
The two-hour drill was organised at four different locations by the Gurgaon Disaster Management Authority (GDMA) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The exercise was conducted at Government College Sector 14 on MG Road, Mini Secretariat near Rajiv Chowk, General Hospital and the flyover on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. The drill commenced at 11am.
The Mini Secretariat was made the emergency operation centre. Fire brigade, ambulance and cranes were parked at a vacant plot. Seven Walkie Talkie sets were distributed among the teams.
As soon as the siren was sounded at 11 am, officials ducked under tables and headed towards the staircase. The rubber pipe used by the fire brigade to deliver water on the floors of the secretariat was found leaking. Door and window-cutter machines by the GDMA and NDMA were also defunct.
At Signature Tower, commuters were stranded for an hour as traffic had been diverted from the Sector 31 flyover. The flow of vehicles was also diverted on the Expressway.
