Gurgaon: Congress rally to protest rising crime hit by pickpockets

A Congress rally, which was held on Tuesday afternoon against rising crime in Gurgaon and across Haryana, was hit by pickpockets. They allegedly made off with mobiles and wallets leaving the participants shocked.

Among the victims was a former Congress MLA from Faridabad, Anand Kaushik, who had come to participate in the protest organised under the leadership of state party chief Ashok Tanwar.

Three incidents were reported to the City police station by the Congress leaders, which they alleged happened at the Aggarwal Dharmshala where the party workers had gathered to participate in the rally.

Kaushik lost his iPhone 5 while participating in the protest.

Another Congress functionary Lalit Bhadana lost his purse carrying a registration certificate and ID cards including some cash. Aman Ahmed from Mewat, who was also present at the protest, lost his Vivo phone in the rally.

Inder Singh, a resident of Gurgaon, was robbed of ₹25,000 while he was at Agarwal Dharmshala.

Baljeet Kaushik, general secretary, Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, said that these incidents were proof of an alarming increase in crimes in the city, and if left unchecked, would lead to lawlessness. “This is what we wanted to highlight in the rally and this incident only proves our point,” he said.

Sources said the Congress rally, which was meant to take place at 10am, was delayed by almost 3 to 4 hours because the party leaders, who gathered at Aggarwal Dharmshala got into a heated discussion over some issues. A senior leader was apparently miffed over some issue and it took a lot of time to placate him, a source said.

A large posse of police could be seen waiting for the rally at the Gurgaon police commissionerate on Tuesday afternoon.

“We have received the complaints and cases have been registered. These incidents could have happened anywhere between Aggarwal Dharmshala and police commissionerate,” Vikram Nehra, SHO, city police station, said.
