Gurgaon: Dengue count at 57

Last year, the city had reached a five-year high in the number of dengue cases with the district health department registering 401 cases. In 2012, 375 cases were reported, while 175 were reported in 2013, 86 in 2014 and 381 in 2015.

The number of dengue cases in the city has reached 57 after 10 more cases were confirmed this week.

Doctors at Gurgaon’s Civil Hospital said that this year, the majority of dengue patients are in the age group of 10 to 35 years. Also, the maximum number of confirmed dengue cases have been recorded from DLF Phase 1, Sector 45 and Sector 56.

Doctors also said that though most cases have been recorded from these areas, many residents of new, developing sectors have also been diagnosed with dengue fever.

“The new, developing areas do not have proper sanitation. Also, bad condition of roads turns these into breeding grounds for dengue-causing mosquitoes,” said BK Rajora, chief medical officer, Civil Hospital, Gurgaon.

Doctors have advised residents to wear full-sleeved clothing and to use mosquito repellents. “Vector-borne diseases are on a rise despite the city recording fewer spells of rain than usual in the monsoon. The problem can only be addressed by keeping our surroundings clean. Dengue-causing mosquitoes breed in fresh water and it takes a week for the larvae to hatch,” SS Saroha, deputy civil surgeon, Civil Hospital, said.

So far, no dengue-related death has been reported in the city. Doctors said that residents should not panic but instead take precautionary measures and seek immediate seek medical aid in case of symptoms.
