Gurgaon: Hero Honda underpass gets new deadline of December 31

The NHAI has sent December 31 as the deadline for completing construction of the underpass at Hero Honda Chowk

After several delays due to litigation, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has set December 31 as the deadline for completing the construction of the Hero Honda Chowk underpass.

Once functional, the underpass is expected to decongest the junction by creating a one km passage for commuters to travel between sectors 10 A and 37.

The Hero Honda Chowk underpass was conceptualised in 2007. However, due to multiple delays and litigations in acquiring land for the project, it remained in a limbo.

In 2014, the Haryana government transferred eight acres of land belonging to the Haryana urban development authority (Huda) to NHAI for building an underpass and a flyover at the Hero Honda Chowk.

Construction for the project started last year but had to be stalled for more than six months due to a restaurant coming in its way. Recently, the Punjab and Haryana high court passed a judgment in favour of NHAI allowing it to resume construction two months ago.

Ashok Kumar Sharma, project director of NHAI, confirmed the deadline, but did not divulge any further details on the matter.

“The restaurant and a few other property owners had stalled Huda from allocating 900m land for the project. Owing to the stalemate there was no progress in the construction. However, the high court order paved way for demolishing these structures and work has accelerated since then,” a senior NHAI official said.

“Excavation, backfilling and concrete dismantling work are nearing completion and girders and beams will also be set soon,” the official added.

At the Hero Honda Chowk, traffic converges from major centres including Pataudi, Sohna, Manesar and Gurgaon. To remove the bottleneck, the underpass and flyover have been planned at the site to widen the intersection and reduce traffic congestion.

The flyover is expected to be completed by next month.
