In a case of rash driving on Thursday morning, a labourer was killed after a speeding luxury car ran over him near Universal Business Tower, Sector 57 extension road.
The car driver, a woman, was arrested, produced in court and released on bail.
The police identified the victim as Mahesh Kumar, 40, from Begusarai in Bihar. He lived in a rented accommodation in Ghasola village, Badshahpur, and worked in a private company.
The car, police said, was driven by 39-year-old Sonia Malhotra, a resident of Model Town, Delhi, and a senior executive of a real estate company on Sohna Road.
An eyewitness, Rahul Kumar, told the police that Malhotra, who was accompanied by her personal security officer, lost control of her brand new car and ran over Kumar, who was crossing the road.
The eyewitness allegedly also told police that instead of applying the brakes, Malhotra stepped on the accelerator. Kumar, police said, was on his way to a private hospital in Badshahpur to visit his daughter when he witnessed the accident.
Malhotra and her PSO were not injured. Her car had a temporary registration number and its front glass and right side of the bumper were damaged, police said.
Police officers from a nearby police booth rushed to the spot and arrested Malhotra. The police had impounded the car.
“We booked the driver under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. The body was handed over to the family members after a post-mortem examination on Thursday,” assistant commissioner of police Hawa Singh said.
