The deceased were identified as Suresh Devi (50), her daughter-in-law Sharmila (26) and granddaughter Nidhi (3).

The police suspect that Devi’s son Rajesh Kumar — a military police jawan posted at Imphal — is behind the crime. Kumar had returned home on a month’s leave 20 days ago.

As per the postmortem report, the women were first poisoned and then strangulated to death, police said.

Kumar told the police that when he woke up at 4am, he did not find his wife Sharmila in the bedroom. While Kumar’s room is on the first floor, his mother stayed on the groundfloor.

“I went down and saw my mother and wife hanging from the ceiling, while my daughter was lying on the bed. I immediately informed the police and my in-laws at Rewari,” alleged Kumar.

However, Sharmila’s father Mukesh Kumar Yadav does not believe Kumar’s version of the story.

He alleged that Kumar had killed Sharmila and Suresh Devi as the latter always supported his daughter.

Yadav told the police that earlier too, Sharmila had complained to him that Kumar had been torturing her since marriage. “He also fought after Sharmila gave birth to a daughter,” alleged Yadav.

Meanwhile, the police has taken Kumar into custody.

“The scene of the crime was doctored. It’s not a simple case of suicide. Kumar has been taken into custody for interrogation. We are probing the case from all angles,” said Maheshwar Dayal, DCP (east).

Dr Deepak Mathur, who conducted the postmortem, said, “This is a murder case. The three were given a poisonous substance to make them unconscious and later smothered to death. There are injury marks on their necks. We have sent the viscera to the Madhuban lab.”
