Removal of jersey barriers causes snarls, risks lives
Traffic officials said that the jersey barriers have been removed temporarily to streamline traffic movement on another roadgurgaon Updated: Feb 19, 2018 17:30 IST
Motorists coming from Sector 34 towards Bakhtawar Chowk are grappling with snarls and minor accidents, owing to the poor placement of a bus stop, speed breaker and a cut towards residential areas of Sector 47, barely a few metres from the point where the two-way flyover at Subhash Chowk ends.
Commuters unfamiliar with the city roads often drive at the flyover at high speed, unaware of the bus stop, cut and speed breaker lying ahead.
“I have been witness to several minor accidents at the spot, as commuters coming from the flyover collide with vehicles attempting to join the road from the cut. Authorities need to take immediate action before fatalities are reported,” Kritank Thakur, a resident of Sector 46, said.
Residents living near the spot claim that earlier the cut to residential areas had been blocked off by jersey barriers and commuters had to go below the flyover for making a U-turn. This, they said, was proving to be an effective solution as it reduced congestion at the spot.
However, the jersey barriers were removed a few months ago without any clear reason and the turn towards residential areas was opened again.
“The authorities, to an extent, had been able to solve the congestion problem by blocking off the turn by putting jersey barriers. It remains unclear, however, why they were removed,” Anjali Rungta, a resident of Sector 47, said.
Authorities conceded that the jersey barriers were temporarily relocated to reduce congestion at another spot, but assured that they will be back on the spot soon.
“We had temporarily relocated the jersey barriers to another spot to streamline traffic movement. A new batch of jersey barriers have been allocated for the spot near Subhash Chowk flyover and normal traffic movement will be restored soon,” Hira Singh, ACP (traffic), said.
Traffic police officers said that the placement of speed breakers was important, as it checks the speed of vehicles before they proceed towards residential areas ahead. They also said that they are working towards a proposal for shifting the bus stop ahead.
